The phasing in of pensions auto-enrolment has almost concluded. A key point was recently reached for all current employers that had staff when it was launched in 2012- they should have assessed their workers for eligibility by 30 April 2017.
For employers that took on workers for the first time on or after 1 April 2012, there’s still a period of phased start dates for auto-enrolment.

A new regime will apply if you employ someone for the first time from 1 October 2017, from this date auto-enrolment will begin on the day your first employee starts work for you. You should start preparing for auto-enrolment as soon as you know you’ll be taking on an employee, as it can take a few weeks planning to set up an auto-enrolment scheme.
