How can you use your personal tax account?

Do you know how to effectively use your personal tax account? You can use it to check your records and manage your details with HMRC. Introduced by HMRC in 2015, it brings all your tax information into one place and allows you to view and make changes to your tax affairs only rather than having to spend time on lengthy phone calls to HMRC. It can help you have better control over your personal tax affairs by giving you up to date information that is easily accessible.

There are over 30 services available on the personal tax account system, including:

  • Checking your income tax estimate and tax code
  • Filling in and sending personal tax returns, as well as viewing previous tax returns
  • Claiming a tax refund
  • Checking your income from work and tax and national insurance you’ve paid over the last 5 years
  • Checking and managing your tax credits
  • Checking your state pension
  • Tracking any forms that you’ve submitted online
  • Checking and updating your Marriage Allowance
  • Updating any information regarding child benefit and tax free childcare
  • Making changes to key details such as name or address
  • Updating benefits that you get from work such as company cars, medical insurance
  • Finding your national insurance number

How do you register for these services?

If you’ve previously registered for Self Assessment online, you’ll already have a Personal Tax Account. You can sign in using your Government Gateway user ID and password.

If you haven’t set up an account previously, you can create one on the gov.uk website. To create a Government Gateway account you’ll need your National Insurance number or UK address and a recent payslip, P60 or a valid UK passport.
